Garter Snakes

(Thamnophis sirtalis sirtalis)

Garter snakes are generally diurnal. They are highly variable in appearance. Garter snakes occupy a variety of habitats including ponds and stream edges, wetlands, forests, fields, rocky hillsides and residential areas. They are viviparous (give birth to live young) and sometimes have more than 50 babies. They feed on worms, slugs, frogs, toads, salamanders, fish and tadpoles.
