Scarlet Snake

(Cemophora coccinea)

Scarlet snakes are fairly small (up to 20 in) relatively slender snakes that are patterned with alternating red, black and white or yellow bands. Scarlet snakes are commonly found in pine flatwoods, dry prairies, hardwood hammocks, and sandhills. These secretive snakes are primarily burrowers and are usually found under rocks, logs, and other debris. These snakes are nocturnal and are sometimes seen crossing roads after dark.
