They are not aggressive & generally avoid contact with people. However, bites can be very dangerous to people. If bitten you should seek immediate medical care. Most bites happen when the snakes are intentionally molested or accidentally stepped on. This is a snake that should be admired at a distance and simply left alone and not bothered.

Status: Endangered in Massachusetts, and, under the Massachusetts Endangered Species Act, it is illegal to kill, harass, or possess this snake.
